The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is one of the best things to do in Dallas for Families. Find out what’s new including the Creatures of Light exhibit, Ellie May, and 3D Films and enter to win tickets.
Since the Perot Museum opened the doors to their gorgeous new building in 2012, our family has loved visiting the museum as often as possible. With four floors and dozens of exhibits, there is something to interest everyone in the family.
This winter, they are hosting some fabulous exhibits and events that families will love. I was invited to a Family Blogger Day to preview some of the exciting things happening this holiday season.
Ellie May at the Perot Museum
The Perot Museum has a new family member! Ellie May is a Columbian Mammoth discovered and excavated right here in Texas. We were able to meet the paleontologist, Dr. Ron Tykoski and learned a few interesting facts about the incredible find.
She was found in Ellis County and her skeleton was almost complete. They were even able to recover her tail – extremely rare because it is typically the first thing to be scavenged, hers was preserved because she tucked it underneath her body. She is beautifully displayed in a unique way that allows visitors to see her as she was at the excavation site.
This exhibit is located right off the elevators on Level 3. If you visit Ellie May at the museum, check out the display on the wall – you are able to control a camera pointed over the mammoth to get a better look.
Creatures of Light at the Perot Museum
Another new experience at the Perot Museum is the Creatures of the Night: Nature’s Bioluminescence exhibit on the lower level across from the Children’s museum.
There are larger-than-life replicas of glowing mushrooms, vampire squid, flickering fireflies, fluorescent corals, and even live flashlight fish. It is an amazing exhibit your family won’t want to miss.
Of course, you won’t want to miss the stunning 3D Films in the Hoglund Foundation Theater. Right now, they are showing four brilliant films including Jerusalem 3D, Walking with Dinosaurs: Prehistoric Planet 3D, Wildest Weather in the Solar System 3D, and Wonders of the Arctic 3D.
Don’t miss these great events happening throughout winter break:
- First Thursday Late Night: Festive will feature National Geographic filmmaker Daniel Ferguson. He introduce his film Jerusalem 3D on Thursday, Dec 3 at 7pm. There will also be various activities like making snow, creating electrical circuit cards and making tinsel float.
- Discovery Days: Darkness featuring activities focused on nocturnal animals and creatures found deep in the ocean and inside of caves. Saturday, Dec 12 from 10am-4pm.
- Winter Break: December 19 – January 3 (except for Christmas day), daily activities will include “science on the spot”, bookworm readings, “winter under a microscope” activities, science trivia, and drop-in winter actives (like Rube Goldberg contraptions and snow-making building block challenges). Click here for a detailed schedule.
- New Year’s Winter Wonderland Sleepover will be a night kids will never forget. Children ages 6-12 are invited to doze with the dinosaurs on January 2, 2016. Activities include behind-the-scenes after-hours access to exhibits, exclusive demonstrations, hands-on discovery plus a late night snack, a 3D film and a light breakfast.
Of course, we had to explore the rest of the museum while we were there. Really, the best reason to visit the Perot Museum is to see the amazement and wonder on your little one’s face as they realize just how interesting our world can be.
With so many exciting things happening at the Perot Museum, I’m thrilled to be giving away tickets to experience the magic! One person will win a Family Four Pack of tickets to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and entrance to the Creatures of Light: Natures Bioluminescence exhibit to be used before January 8.
